Instructions.—The sheet of paper to be written on must be so placed that the widest margin will be at the top of the page, and the narrow space for numbers of the questions on the left. Marginal lines have been ruled, and the writing should not extend beyond these. The number of the questions should be written in the narrow space between the vertical ruled lines. Each subject should be written only once, on the upper line, near the middle of the first page, and the name of the pupil should be written to the right of it, on the same line. A line should be left blank after the subject, and after each answer. Not more than one subject should be written on any page. The pages used for each subject should be numbered from one upwards, and the number should be written near the upper outer corner of the page, but inside the marginal line. In arithmetic give the work in full, and after the answer write Ans. No credit will be allowed if the work is not given. When a subject is finished, take the work to the teacher’s desk. Pains should be taken with expression, arrangement, penmanship, and neatness in the written work, as it will be preserved in the office of the Superintendent and be subject to inspection, but the work must not be copied.

1. What is an abbreviation? Give one. Use the comma correctly in the following sentence: Glass is brittle hard smooth and transparent.
2. Write the following correctly:
   a) Has George and albert ever been to south America?
   b) Him and me set at the window.
   c) The father he died and the children they were taken sick.
   d) Them pigeons belong to John and I.
   e) It was me.
   f) My letter was wrote yesterday.
3. Into what classes are sentences divided with regard to their manner of predication? Give an example of each class.
   Write the following:
   a) A compound sentence
   b) A sentence containing an infinitive.
   c) A sentence containing a prepositional phrase.
4. Combine the following sentences into one:
   Leonidas dies. Leonidas was a king. He was king of Sparta. Three hundred of his countrymen died with him. They died like heroes. It was at Thermopylae. They died to defend their country. They were defending their country against the Persians.
5. Give any two of the rules for the use of capital letters, with an example under each. In giving examples make complete sentences.
6. Define pronunciation. Name the mark that shows the stress of syllables. Place the macron, breve, and diaeresis where they are needed to indicate the correct pronunciation of the following words: calmness, idea, abdomen, horizon.
7. Give sentences in which the noun “horse” is used in the following relations”
   a) As subject of a verb.
   b) As object of a verb.
   c) As object of a preposition.
   d) As a possessive.
8. Tell to what part of speech each word in the following sentence belongs:
   Her couch was dressed with here and there winter berries and green leaves.
9. Write separately the propositions in the annexed lines. Underscore each entire subject with on line and each entire predicate with two.
   “I steal by lawns and grassy plots,
   I slide by hazel covers,
   I move the sweet forget-me-nots
   The grow for happy lovers.”
   To what does “grassy” relate? What adjunct is added to the verb “slide”? What is the object of “move”?
10. Tell what you know about any one of the following places, writing the subject you may select at the head of the page. You may, if you have visited the place selected, tell what you saw there. “National Museum,” “The Washington Monument,” “The Corcoran Gallery of Art,” “Mount Vernon,” “Arlington,” “The Library of Congress,” any one of the public squares.

Divide each side into two equal parts and draw from the dividing points axes of symmetry; in each field thus obtained draw the conventionalized form of any leaf that you can remember: Connect them by any form in the centre that you think will make a good design.
